- SUMMARY (2–3 sentences) — What is the source's central argument or main claim? What are the two or three most important points? Do not evaluate yet.
- EVALUATION (2–3 sentences) — Who is the author, and what qualifies them? Is the source current for your topic? Is it peer-reviewed or popular press? Is there visible bias? Is information verifiable?
- USE (1–2 sentences) — How will you use this source in your essay? Which section of your argument does it support? Does it provide background, evidence, counterargument, or expert testimony?
- CHECK — Is the total annotation 100–150 words? Is it written in complete sentences? Is it in your own words (no quotations from the source)?
