- AUTHOR AND TITLE — Write the author's full name and the full title of the work. How do you introduce this in an academic signal phrase?
- MAIN CLAIM — In one sentence, state the author's central argument or main idea. Do not use the author's exact words.
- MAJOR SUPPORTING POINTS — List 3–4 key points the author uses to develop the main claim. Use your own words for each.
- CONCLUSION — In one sentence, describe how the author closes or what the text finally says.
- DRAFT SENTENCE — Combine the above into a summary paragraph using signal phrases and attribution verbs. No quotations needed in a summary.
- CHECK — Verify: Is every idea from the text, not your opinion? Are all words and sentence structures your own? Have you named the author at least twice?
